“When you are well groomed and modestly dressed, you invite the companionship of the Spirit and you can be a good influence on others” (For the Strength of Youth, 6).

“Immodest clothing is any clothing that is tight, sheer, or revealing in any other manner. Young women should avoid short shorts and short skirts, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and clothing that does not cover the shoulders or is low-cut in the front or the back. . . . Young men and young women should be neat and clean and avoid being extreme or inappropriately casual in clothing, hairstyle, and behavior” (For the Strength of Youth, 7).

Participants will not be allowed to check in if they do not meet the following standards. Adherence will be enforced.

Hair

  • Hairstyles should be conservative, clean, and neat, with no extreme styles or unnatural colors.

Ear, Face, and Body Piercings

  • Excessive ear piercing (more than one per ear) and all other body piercings are unacceptable.

Clothing

  • Clothing that is low-cut in the front or back, sheer, tight, or revealing in any other way is not acceptable. Avoid being sloppy or inappropriately casual. Extreme clothing (i.e., gothic, emo, etc.) is not appropriate. 

Blouses, Shirts, and Tops

  • Must be modest in fit, extend below the waistline, and be long enough to cover the stomach and lower back, especially when bending over or raising hands or arms. Sleeves must cover the shoulders. 
  • If a blouse does not meet the approved length or is sheer, an undershirt with sleeves must be worn to ensure modesty.

Dresses, Skirts, and Shorts*

  • Must be knee-length or longer, even when worn with leggings or other form-fitting pants.
  • Slits in dresses and skirts must not go above the knee.
  • Dresses with spaghetti straps are not permitted unless a shirt or blouse is worn underneath.

Jeans, Pants, and Capris*

  • No shreds or holes.
  • Pants that are tight and form-fitting or excessively baggy or sloppy are not acceptable.
  • Leggings cannot be worn as pants.

Footwear*

  • Footwear should be appropriate for the activity. (Beach or athletic footwear is not appropriate Sunday attire.)
  • Footwear should be worn at all times in public campus areas.

Hats

  • Hats are not to be worn indoors.

Casual and Sunday Dress

  • Review our Standards for Sunday Dress poster.
  • Appropriate casual dress includes jeans, pants, T-shirts, athletic shoes, flats, and flip-flops.*
  • Appropriate Sunday dress includes dresses, skirts and blouses, and appropriate footwear.

* BYU–Idaho’s official policy does not permit bib overalls (any style), flip-flops, or shorts or capris of any length on campus. Denim or Levi’s-style skirts that are not overly faded or grubby looking should be considered casual dress.

Facial Hair

  • Must be clean shaven with no facial hair of any kind. Sideburns must not go below the ear lobes or onto the cheek.

Hair

  • Must be trimmed above the collar; ears and eyes must be visible. You cannot meet these standards by tucking your hair behind the ears or hiding it under a hat.
  • No ponytails, pigtails, braids, designs, carvings, man buns, top knots, or mohawks.
  • No unnatural hair color.
